The news that Avatar has surpassed Titanic to become the highest grossing movie of all time won't harm it's chances of winning a hatful of Oscars next month. But just how good is it? Will it stand the test of time, as Close Encounters of the Third Kind has, to become a science fiction classic?
I suspect not, if only because the 3D technology it utilises is bound to become obsolete before long, surpassed by something far superior. Will audiences even have access to the appropriate glasses in five years? No doubt James Cameron will tinker with it from time to time to make it compatible with whatever the state-of-the-art 3D format is, but, ultimately, it is destined for the scrapheap, a curiosity like Creature From the Black Lagoon.
