I’ve just returned from St Andrew’s where I was attending the annual jamboree of the HMC, the most hoity toity of the Independent schools associations. I was invited by this year’s Chairman – Kenneth Durham, the headmaster of University College School in London – to give a seminar on the implications of the government’s education reforms for the independent sector. I was keen to do it because it was an opportunity to evangelise to a powerful and impressive group of head teachers about the benefits of starting a free school or sponsoring an academy.
