Hats off to Paxo. In the words of Lionel Barber, the editor of the FT who appeared as a guest on Newsnight last night, Paxman “bagged a tiger”.
Danny Alexander was the man in the hotseat yesterday, wheeled out to defend the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, and he did it unflinchingly, as he always does. Paxman’s opening question was, “So you’re accepting that Plan A hasn’t worked?” and didn’t let up for seven-and-a-half minutes. In the midst of this intense cross-examination, with Paxman on top prosecutorial form, Alexander was asked whether the Lib Dems were signed up to two additional years of austerity – a reference to the extra rounds of cuts in 15/16 and 16/17 announced by the Chancellor yesterday.
