There’s a great story in the Daily Mail this morning saying that Michael Gove has pledged to make it easier for schools to sack bad teachers.
At present, head teachers in maintained schools find it almost impossible to get rid of under-performing teachers, so great is the power of the teaching unions. In 2010, Panorama investigated this phenomenon and found that only 18 teachers in the UK has been struck off for incompetence by the General Teaching Council in the past 40 years.
