Britain's Got Talent

As someone who has served as a judge on various reality shows, I have been following the story of Susan Boyle’s admission to the Priory with a good deal of interest. Are Simon Cowell, Peirs Morgan and Amanda Holden -- the judges on Britain’s Got Talent -- in some way culpable?

The short answer is no. All reality show judges worry that a failed contestant will suffer some sort of breakdown after being eliminated and that they will then be held responsible for causing him or her psychological harm. But that isn’t what happened here. Susan Boyle was never eliminated from Britain’s Got Talent. She came second and that was a decision made by the public, not by the judges. In their comments on her performance in the final they were typically effusive, not saying anything that might have conceivably upset her.

Of course, this doesn’t completely absolve Simon Cowell since he is one of the owners of the Got Talent franchise in addition to being a judge. That means he must bear some responsibility for the decision to allow Susan Boyle to appear on the programme in the first place. Boyle was deprived of oxygen as a baby and as a result was diagnosed as having learning difficulties. The real issue is whether it can ever be right to feature people like Boyle on reality shows.

My view is that it turns on the degree of mental impairment. Should Susan Boyle, who volunteered to appear on the show, have been ruled out by the producers on the grounds that she’s not capable of making an informed decision about the costs and benefits of appearing on the show? The problem with that criterion is that it would rule out 95 per cent of the contestants on reality shows. Surely, if someone is capable of looking after themselves -- is allowed to vote, get married, drink alcohol, and so forth -- then they should be allowed to compete on a reality show. To deny Boyle that chance would be to say that she isn’t allowed to participate in certain activities in virtue of her mental disability. We wouldn’t want Susan Boyle to be prevented from having children. So why should she be prevented from appearing on Britain’s Got Talent?

You could say the same thing of a young child who is being pushed by their mother but has no real clue about what they are letting themselves in for, surely?
The 'reality' of Susan Boyle is that she was there of her own accord, she could sing very well, and she deserved the chance. It wasn't like she was brain dead. You can't predict how someone will cope with the pressure of fame. Britney wasnt starved of oxygen but she ended up in a clinic too...
I am sure if you analyzed Darth Jackson and that dude who stuck a drill up his conk they wouldnt be given the 'all clear' either.

It is a tricky one but if you open a competition up to the public and people who have had no contact with the rest of the world then this is inevitable. I don't really see any fair vetting system that wouldn't seem prejudiced as the margins are too wide.

It is a competition aimed to give people who would never have had a chance a chance. Boyle could sing and that is that. The rest is just pot luck and hoping they can handle it.

I don't really think the it’s fair for anyone to say that people with learning difficulties are the only ones who wouldn’t cope with ‘fame’. Like Dawn said, even Britney ended up in a clinic. As do lots of celebs (Maybe for different reasons but still..) For Boyle the fact is, the world put so much pressure on her as an act she was never going to be able to live up to it.

I think going from just an average lady from Scotland who genuinely just wanted to sing to an overnight superstar appearing on Opera & having over a million hits on Youtube when at the final, after the public all over the world have been raving about you for months, decided you weren’t the winner after all, would make anybody slightly ill.

I don’t think it’s a case of ‘she is mentally challenged therefore couldn’t cope’ I honestly believe she was never going to be able to live up to the expectations the world had on her. It was a situation she wasn’t ever going to win…

Posted by Lazy Student on 03-06-2009 09:52:

I find it quite disturbing how few people know she has learning difficulties. Particularly irresponsible of the tabs on this one. It doesn't have to be a 'SuBo Goes Loco' story, it could easily have been a quite moving, accurate story of her actual life, overcoming difficulties etc. But no, they went for the 'Fat lady from Scotland is mental' route. Oh dear.

Posted by Jim Band on 03-06-2009 10:17:

I do not for one minute think she should have been stopped from enering the competition.

The situation with susan is not good she was set up on by the british publilc if the truth be known to take a huge fall. The people who rated her so hi and ran out and placed a bet on her after the first show are the ones to blame.

The press didnt help by taking someone who has never really been in the limelight from nothing to international fame in the space of a couple of weeks, this is enough to blow the mind of anyone let alone susan.

As someone who has suffered from a mental illness for years i detest the mental card being played everytime things go wrong.

Well, although the support network of SB could be questioned in the last few weeks, I don't think any blame can be apportioned directly to BGT.

She has a natural talent - which, if possible in light of recent events, should be nurtured carefully..and sympathetically..

It says everything about our country that we build people up like SB within no time at all...only to then take sometimes the first opportunity to have a go and break her.

To be fair, thousands of 'wannabes' queue for hours in the hope of spending 5 mins with Simon's big minder...and if you assessed them, they could come out as 'normal' - regardless of their own delusions of having 'talent'....

I wish Darth Jackson would have kept the hood on to be honest..as for Nick Death (or whatever his name was...) well, think of how long his extremities will be when he's 70....will look great at Darby & Joan Club in a Batricar I bet....

I think there is a responsibility on the producers of the show. In these talent/audition type shows like Britain's Got Talent, and the Idol Franchise unfortunately they pick the freaks, weirdos and the deluded to be laughed at in the audition process. Now most of these people don't get through beyond round 1, but Susan Boyle did.

The producer's would have known she was a best emotionally vulnerable, and they did indeed set her up to be laughed at at her first audition even though the joke would soon be on the audience and judges.

The producer's wanted to use all the things that screamed out she may have had a mental illness to promote her. These were she was never really had a job, and had lived with her parents and now by herself and she was a virgin. She would have also presented as a bit simple.

They were using her for their own benefit to attract viewers to the show.

I don't begrudge her the right to audition, but she would not have the foresight to know what she was really getting herself in for and that is what the show would have been aware of.

I also find the right to audition for a reality TV show compared to the right to have a children a bit trite.

Personally I believe you should only have a child if you are going to be capable of actually being responsible for it.

I agree. Also, consistent with letting people compete in such events should be the legalisation of a few currently illegal drugs.
