Inglourious Basterds gets a Best Original Screenplay nomination but The Hangover doesn't? WTF?!?

I'm still reeling from the shock that Inglourious Basterds received eight Oscar nominations, only one less than Avatar. I've already blogged about Inglourious Basterds on my own website and won't stretch your patience by repeating all the same points here. I can understand Christoph Waltz getting a Best Supporting Actor nod, but to nominate Inglourious Basterds for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar is utterly incomprehensible. It isn't a screenplay, so much as a collection of stylistic tics in search of a story. Tarantino can't even write a good scene any more, let alone an entire movie. Virtually every scene in the film is at least twice as long as it needs to be and sitting through it's 153 minute running time is a hair-pulling, teeth-grinding ordeal. (To read more, click here.)

Oh no, Inglourious Basterds is the best war movie ever. It merges hitherto repressed fantasy alternates with a very loose verisimilitude, reinventing a tired literalist genre in the process. Please check your lurch into foolishness. Or else.

Agreed! For my Top20 2010 over at FatScribe, I have no Inglourious Basterds, but do include The Hangover. The screenplay was so original, and Tarantino is a terrific pro, but dude, c'mon, does this recent film warrant the 2nd most nominations?

Let me know what you think about my Top20 when you've a moment to comment! http://fatscribe.com/2010/01/2009-movies-in-review.html

i agree
tarantino is a fraud always has been
he can convert others ideas onto celluloid( he never wrote pulp fiction! hey, sue me)
i could not even watch this movie its just such a mess, incoherent and stumbles along like an abondeded indian donkey dragging itself painfully along hobbling on the broken leg no use to its owners and to expensive to put down.
Cruelty on a level we in the west cannot understand.
painful and heart destroying to watch

Tintin Quarantino was a refreshing director for a while (back then) but he's never been a great screenwriter. He loves depicting violence but you get the feeling he's never been in a fight. Inglourious Bastards doesn't deserve any awards, except, I agree, Christoph Waltz. Meanwhile, join my campaign to Green up the Oscars by recycling them: limit the number in circulation and make stars give them back when they make a bad film.
