Why Capello? Why?Why Capello? Why? Okay, I know stripping John Terry of his captaincy has got nothing to do with the fact that he can't keep his trousers zippered. All that guff about expecting Terry to conduct himself in a manner befitting someone who represents his country can't have cut any ice with the England manager. After all, why hold Terry to a standard that doesn't apply to an ex-foreign secretary (Cook), an ex-President of the United States (Clinton), a future King of England (Charles) and -- most pointedly -- an ex-England captain (Beckham). Let's not forget that Beckham was accused of similar shenanigans on the eve of a major international tournament in 2004 yet wasn't stripped of his captaincy. (To read more, click here.)

It's not the precedent of the dishonoured you should be aspiring to; it's the concept of the "right thing". Honour. Weird concept for you? Re: Why Capello? Why? Posted by toby Young on 05-02-2010 23:30: Is it honourable to do the bidding of the crowd? Re: Why Capello? Why? Posted by Stepney on 05-02-2010 23:55: Well some might call that democracy but that's not my point. You can follow precedent and sweep it all away under the carpet, say it's not important, nothing to get upset about, shouldn't affect his position etc But...to stand up, just for once and say, do you know, this time it does matter. Maybe for the sake of the dressing room, maybe for the simple sake of a little integrity. There's a notion that from a pragmatic point of view it lances the boil too. The fact the media wolves have been slavering over the meat doesn't mean the action Capello has taken is the wrong one - nor evidence that he is bowing to pressure. Re: Why Capello? Why? Posted by Mousquetaire on 11-02-2010 01:26: I think he had to go; he alienated at least one player, and it would have been unfair to demand all the England players to continue to accept him as captain. Though, I agree, it would also have been nice to see him snub an overly prurient Mail. [As for the Beckham incident, you might remember that was under a manager who overindulged him to the detriment of the team.] |
