David Laws's resignation caps a bad week for the coalition and David Cameron in particular.
First, he was forced to backtrack on his attempt to neuter the 1922 Committee. Then Andy Coulson managed to antagonise the executive editor of Question Time to such an extent that he went public about what was a fairly routine request for the Labour Party to put up a member of the Shadow Cabinet on the panel before agreeing to put up a member of the Cabinet. And now this – the resignation of the man who, more than any other Lib Dem, convinced Tory sceptics that the coalition might actually be a good thing. (To read more, click here.)
